Colombia’s national registrar gets another term, ahead of Sunday’s elections

Colombia’s state council, High Court and constitutional court unanimously re-elected Carlos Ariel Sanchez as the country’s national registrar with less than 48 hours to go until the elections.

The re-election of Sanchez entitles him to serve four more years in the role he first assumed in 2007.

The national registrar, who is in charge of the National Civil Registry and will be overseeing the upcoming local elections, is elected based on a system of merit points.

Colombians go to the polls on Sunday for local elections that experts are warning are set to be marked by high levels of violence and corruption.
