Three Colombians have picked up prizes at the Rey de España International Journalism Awards in Madrid, Spain, Caracol Radio reported Monday.
In a ceremony presided over by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, 170 distinguished journalists from the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world were nominated for various awards.
The recipients were selected by a joint panel arranged by the Spanish international news agency EFE, and the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECID).
With 30 nominations, Colombia was the second most represented country after Brazil.
In a speech during the awards ceremony, Juan Carlos said that from the participating countries “come voices and images of a journalism that has not abandoned its roots and values.”
Colombian journalist Jose Enrique Guarnizo received the Press prize for a report on illegal African and Asian immigrants who arrive in Colombia’s Uraba region on their journey to the United States, which was published in Medellin’s El Colombiano newspaper.
His fellow countrymen Waldir Ochoa Guzman and Victor Hugo Deossa took the prize in the Television category for a segment entitled “La Verdad” (The Truth), which documents cases of people who have gone missing during Colombia’s decades-old internal conflict reported Fox News Latino.
