Colombia’s Prosecutor General accused of abusing power

Colombia’s Prosecutor General has been accused of abusing his power through illegal political participation.

A report submitted to Accusations Commission of the House of Representatives made the claims, specifically referring to Eduardo Montealegre’s statement on April 29 that ex-President Alvaro Uribe “is thinking more of his own political benefit and of the elections in May than of the peace process.”

According to lawyer Saul Villar, who submitted the report, the statement, along with other opinions recently made public by the Prosecutor General, is an example of Montealegre overstepping the boundaries of his position and represents “an attack on the decorum of his charge.”

The president of the Accusations Commission, Constantino Rodriguez on Tuesday declared that the accusation is based on “illegal counselling and involvement in politics and abuse of power”. Rodriguez stated that the government body will “will make the appropriate distribution to assign the investigation [into Montealegre’s actions] and to proceed with the corresponding procedures.”
