Colombia on Friday will present a candidate for secretary general of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) to replace the deceased Nestor Kirchner, Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin announced.
At the fourth Summit of UNASUR in Guyana last week, the heads of state agreed to meet at the Ibero-American Summit in Argentina to present their candidates.
“The idea is that each country nominates a candidate and we choose the best one. In Mar del Plata [Argentina], at the Ibero-American summit, a meeting will take place to discuss the nominations made by each country for a new secretary general,” Holguin told El Espectador.
The minister stated that she was aware that Venezuela would also present its own candidate, but that “of whom Bogota has the best opinion.”
President Juan Manuel Santos will travel to Argentina on Friday to attend the 20th Ibero-American Summit in Mar del Plata.
UNASUR on Tuesday came into full legal force after Uruguay became the ninth member to ratify the founding treaty. Colombia has not yet ratified the treaty.
