Imports to Colombia continued to surge in June, fueled by higher consumption, and the country posted a $378 million trade surplus, figures published Friday by the government show.
The figure is higher than the $133 million trade surplus posted in June last year. For the first six months of the year, Colombia has registered a trade surplus of $2.2 billion, also higher than the $1.98 billion posted in the same period last year.
Imports in June climbed 46% from a year earlier, the government’s statistics agency, known as DANE, said in a report. Imports for the January-to-June period reached $25.87 billion, a 41.4% increase from the same period last year, the agency said.
Imports appear to be benefiting from a strong economic landscape in Colombia. Authorities expect the economy to grow by as much as 6.5% this year, largely driven by consumer demand.
