Colombia’s largest rebel group FARC said Tuesday that peace talks with the government that started Monday “are advancing at a good pace.”
Speaking before reporters in the Cuban capital Havana, FARC negotiator “Jesus Santrich” said that “we’re advancing at good pace and in the right direction.”
The rebel leader said that he was ” absolutely convinced” that “the Colombian people will win.”
According to Santrich, the guerrillas are trying to broker “the full participation of the people” in the peace process that at this stage is only attended by FARC representatives and a government delegation.
The guerrillas and government representatives started talks Monday morning as part of the so-called “second phase” of the peace talks. This formal phase of the talks is supposed to result in an official end of the 48-year-old armed conflict between the guerrillas and the state.
