Colombia’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered more than $765,000 compensation to be paid to victims of ex-paramilitary chief “El Iguano” of the AUC Catatumbo Bloc.
The Supreme Court ordered the compensation of more than 11 victims of Jorge Ivan Laverde, alias El Iguano, for damages, loss of income and pain and suffering.
The Court also accepted new victims into the process that continues against the former paramilitary leader under the Justice and Peace law, which aims to assist the peace process in Colombia by granting procedural benefits to paramilitaries who agreed to demobilize.
El Iguano who demobilized together with 1,434 members of the AUC Catatumbo Bloc in December 2004, told the court in August how his group had economically and logistically supported former Colombian president Alvaro Uribe’s 2002 election campaign.
