Colombia is missing one final vote to be named to the United Nations Security Council as a rotating member.
President Juan Manuel Santos announced to the Congress Advisory Committee on Foreign Affairs that “we are inches away from this possibility,” according to newspaper El Espectador.
The only country still blocking Colombia’s nomination is Bolivia, said Senator Alexandra Morena Piraquive, a member of the committee.
Bolivian President Evo Morales said in September he opposes Colombia’s seat in the U.N. Security Council, claiming the U.S. ally would represent North American, not Latin American interests.
If voted on to the council, Colombia will be part of the Security Council from in 2011 and 2012.
