If UNASUR agrees to hold its next summit in a country other than Ecuador, Colombia will send its ministers to talk about its military plans
with United States.
Colombia’s Defense Minister, Gabriel Silva, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jaime Bermudez, will attend the UNASUR meeting at the end of August if it takes place somewhere besides Quito, local media reported.
Colombia refuses to attend the meeting in Ecuador because of its strained relations with the Ecuadorean government.
The South American leaders called on Colombian President Alvaro Uribe on Monday to attend an extraordinary UNASUR meeting to discuss the agreement between Colombia and the United States allowing the U.S. to operate from Colombian military bases. Uribe refused to attend the meeting that is currently being held in Quito because he considered that Quito is an inappropriate place to discuss an agreement that is solely between Colombia
and the United States.
