Brazil arrests senior Colombian drug trafficker

Brazil authorities have arrested a suspected Colombian drug trafficker as he attempted to enter the country using a fake Spanish passport, Colombian media reported on Monday.

John Fredy Manco, alias “El Indio,” took a flight from Madrid and arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, however was captured after a tip off from Colombian and Spanish authorities.

El Indio reportedly used the name of Ivan Dario Gallegon Gonzalez to try to enter Brazil and was accompanied by a woman, who has not been identified.

The former paramilitary commander and alleged second-in-command of the Urabeños before the arrest of its founder, “Don Mario,” allegedly controlled the Urabeños’ drug trafficking routes between Colombia, Central America and the US, and was arrested in Colombia in 2008, but released in 2009 after making a deal with the judge.

In 2012, the judge was sentenced to 34 months in prison for his role in the release of Manco and other suspects. The brother of Colombia’s former justice minister and former director of the Medellin Prosecution’s Office is also in jail for his ties to the neo-paramilitary.
