Colombia have lost their crucial World Cup qualifier to Paraguay on
Saturday, and are further away from a World Cup berth than ever.
The home team, for the first time led by Eduardo Lara as replacement of the recently sacked Jose Luis Pinto, were the more dominant side in the opening phase but a fluke goal from Cabañas put the visitors in the lead.
The Paraguayan seemingly tried to send in a cross but the ball, as if caught by the wind, sailed past the stunned goalkeeper Agustín Julio.
Colombia kept attacking but Paraguay’s defense were never in any real danger, keeping their opponents at a save distance from their goal.
In the second half, Paraguay incorrectly had a goal disallowed, one that would probably have decided the match. Later on, Colombia claimed a penalty kick in two occasions but the Argentinian was right both times, by waving play-on.
Colombia are still sixth in the South American qualification group, but could lose their spot to Ecuador and possibly even Venezuela on Sunday.
Paraguay are going strong in the group, having built a four-points lead over second-placed Argentina.
