Colombia’s defense minister announced special security measures after alleged FARC plans to attack foreign embassies in the capital Bogota.
Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera announced the measures after an anonymous email to the Dutch embassy in Bogota claiming the FARC planned attacks on embassies.
Television station RCN on Friday reported that seven embassies and the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican’s diplomatic mission to Colombia, were to be attacked later this month, but this was played down by Rivera.
“The FARC is not actually threatening the embassies. On Thursday, the Embassy of the Netherlands received an email signed anonymously by alleged demobilized members of the FARC, who are now reintegrated into society, that warned about certain information they knew about a threat or activities that were being carried out against certain embassies,” newspaper El Pais quoted the Minister.
“The email was forwarded to other diplomatic delegations, but wasn’t a threat that arrived at the several embassies simultaneously,” Rivera added.
However, the Defense Minister did add that the government implemented additional security measures for the foreign diplomatic corps in Bogota and is investigating the allegations.
