Colombia installed its first solar street light in the southwestern city of Tulua.
The stop light uses low-watt, high-efficiency LED lights, operated by basic software to reduce the unnecessary use of electrical systems
In addition, the street light can be administered and monitored over the internet.
The solar street light is expected to last 25 years, requiring minor maintenance, with lights that last 5 to 10 years.
The installation of the high efficiency street light was part of a decree by Colombia’s Ministry of Mining and Energy, meant to regulate efficient energy use by the state government by mandating a ban on high energy illumination systems and encouraging energy efficiency instead.
