Colombian imports of Canadian wheat for August through April 2012 more than doubled compared to the same period last year, reported Reuters Friday.
Canadian wheat imports increased sharply and amounted to 668,000 tons in the nine months before April.
Colombia’s Trade Minister Sergio Diaz-Granados said in August 2011 the free trade agreement with Canada would give the northern nation’s agricultural sector an “opportunity for growth” in Colombia.
The minister also said that Colombian wheat production was insufficient given high national demand and that under the trade agreement Colombia would be able to import Canadian wheat tariff-free.
The Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement went into effect August 15, 2011.
