Colombia has never been more popular on Google, according to the search engine’s Trends tool which has measured the popularity of search terms since 2004.
According to Google Trends, Colombia in June and July received almost double the attention during the ongoing World Cup soccer in Brazil than on average over the past six years.
The last time the country peaked on Google was in July 2011 when Colombia played Argentina in a qualifying match for the world’s most important soccer tournament.
Other important news events like the rescue of politician Ingrid Betancourt and three American military contractors in 2008 did result in Colombia receiving 43% of online attention it is receiving during the ongoing World Cup.
Colombia’s upwards trend began early this year after the country’s national team had qualified for the World Cup and the country was in the middle of congressional and presidential election races.
According to a timeline, the attention first began trending in Latin America and had become worldwide in the first days of this month.
Google Trends highlighted that searches for “cumbia,” Colombia’s national dance, have doubled after the folkloric dance was adopted by the country’s national team to celebrate goals.
