This weekend Colombians will join in celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” newspaper El Espectador reported Thursday.
Starting Saturday May 5, seven cinemas around Colombia will screen the 2011 version of the film, directed by Nick Morris and Laurence Connor.
The show will screen in Colombia’s three largest cities; Bogota (Andean Multiplex, Unicentro, Santa Fe and Grand Station), Medellin (Multiplex Santa Fe) and Cali (Multiplex Chipichape).
Webber’s musical adaptation premiered on October 9, 1986 at Royal Albert Hall in London and has since captivated audiences worldwide, with an estimated 130 million viewers. The show has also received wide critical acclaim, earning more than 50 theater awards including seven Tony Awards.
“The Phantom of the Opera” is based on Gaston Leroux’s Gothic novel by the same name which tells the tragic story of a disfigured musical prodigy named Erik, who hides in the Paris Opera house, only to fall in love with young star Christine Daae.
