colombia news- french film festival

The tenth annual French Cinema Festival will will come to 16 Colombian cities starting September 14, bringing 40 different French titles.

The French Cinema Festival is one of the most anticipated cultural events in Colombia, and will continue until October 30 in Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, Pereira, Manizales, Cartagena, Armenia, Bucaramanga, Barrancabermeja, Popayan, Santa Marta, Neiva, Tunja and Valledupar.

The festival this year pays homage to Oscar-award winning actress Juliette Binoche who has starred in films such as “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” “The English Patient,” and “Chocolat.” The stunning French actress once said, “Movies are open doors, and at every door, I change character and life… I live for the present always. I accept this risk. I don’t deny the past, but it’s a page to turn.”

The event inauguration will be on September 14 at the Municipal Jorge Eliecer Gaitan theater in honor of the “cine-magician” Georges Melies (1861-1938), commemorating 150 years since his birth with a Cinema-Concert spectacular. The show will feature Melies’ great-granddaughter Marie-Helene Leherissey who will be presenting on the roots of 20th century cinema, accompanied by her son, Melies’ great-great-grandson, Lawrence Leherissey on piano.

During the festival the movies will be divided into various categories such as: unedited full-length films in Colombia, Colombian-French co-productions, “Fete de l’animation,” and a “Paris au present” series.

The French Cinema Festival not only seeks to present a coherent panoramic of French cinema and share the great films that have defined French cinema history, but to also highlight contemporary cinema creations. It is both a platform for launching new films and a way for the Colombian audience to see unreleased, rare, and unedited movies.
