Thanks to a goal by Colombian striker Radamel Falcao, Spanish side Atletico Madrid qualified for the Champion’s League Wednesday.
Falcao scored the last of three goals, securing his team’s 3-2 victory over Celta and a third place in Spain’s top soccer league.
Because of the victory, Atletico can no longer be removed from the third place in La Liga after Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Atletico climbed on to 72 points with three games left to play, 14 points ahead of fourth-placed Real Sociedad, who have a game in hand. Falcao’s goal was his 27th this season.
While the Madrileños are certain to be playing in the Champion’s League, they may have to do so without their top scorer as European sports press speculate the Colombian striker may go to Chelsea at the end of this season.
Before joining Atletico Madrid in 2011, Falcao played for Portuguese side FC Porto and Argentine giants River Plate.
The Santa Marta-born player started his career at Lanceros Boyaca, a team active in Colombia’s second highest league.
