Colombia raised human rights issues with the UN to gain support for its appeal of the world court’s November decision.
A media source reported on Thursday that Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin stated that “the rights of native islanders and fishermen” from San Andres, an area in dispute, had to be protected. Holguin explained that the court’s ruling, which transfers territorial sea from Colombia to Nicaragua, impacts the livelihoods of the fishermen.
Colombian diplomats in Geneva discussed such matters with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
This move is the latest effort by the Colombian government to increase support for its opposition to a new maritime boundary established by the International Court of Justice.
