Colombia’s Inspector General announced Sunday he will investigate alleged corruption in the granting of mining concessions in six departments.
According to a report by Caracol Radio, the Inspector General’s Office is looking into 2 concessions in the departments of Bolivar, Caldas, Boyaca, Cundinamarca and Norte de Santander where there have been complaints of corruption regarding the mining concessions.
Oscar Dario Amaya, The Inspector General’s environmental delegate, told the radio station that his entity is investigating the former director of mining authority Ingeominas and several regional bodies in charge of the potential mining areas.
“We are investigating the six mining delegations in the country and a large number of municipalities and autonomous regional corporations that have failed to monitor and enforce environmental and mining laws,”Amaya told Caracol Radio.
The most common complaint is that mining concessions were granted in areas where mining for environmental reasons is not allowed. Because of this, Ingeominas will have to explain 25 concessions granted in national parks.
