Colombia moved up one place in the official FIFA world soccer rankings Wednesday after a 2-0 victory over Paraguay in their last competitive match.
Jose Pekerman’s side are on a winning run of four games in competitive and friendly fixtures and are now ranked eighth in the world and the second-best team in South America, below Argentina.
Los Cafeteros even lie above five-time World Cup winners Brazil in the rankings. This, however, is in main due to Brazil not having to qualify for the 2014 World Cup – as it is in their own country – and thus not being able to pick up points during the qualification stage.
The two sides meet on November 14 and this will give a better indication of where Pekerman’s side are in relation to their South American neighbors.
Colombia have made great strides since the start of the year and a run of three victories in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying has placed them third in the table, four points behind Argentina and one behind Ecuador but with a game in hand on both.
Bolivia are Colombia’s next competitive opponents as their quest for Brazil 2014 continues next year.
