Colombia celebrates its most important national holiday Monday as it
is exactly 199 years ago that the country declared itself independent
from Spanish rule.
Even though it took another 9 years, 1810 to be officially independent after the 20th of July, Colombians annually celebrate the first “Cry for independence.”
The Grand National Concert, a large number of concerts and musical events, takes place in no less than 1,100 municipalities of the country, the Culture Ministry announced. All concerts will start at noon.
Prominent Colombian artists will perform in all mayor cities, showing the country’s wide range of cultural expressions.
Colombian President Álvaro Uribe will be in the town of Tame, Arauca, where security is at its highest to avoid irregularities, espcially after two small aircrafts mysteriously disappeared off the radar near Cucuta, a city nearby the ceremony.
Colombian embassies across the globe are organizing event to offer migrants the possibility to celebrate their Independence Day or to show the rest of the world what a Colombian party is like.
