Colombia news - earth day

Colombia celebrates Earth Day on Thursday across the country in an effort to raise awareness and appreciation for the conservation of the Earth’s environment.

Colombian presidential candidates will sign the Colombian Environmental Pact today, which is an alliance with citizens to ensure for the candidates’ commitment to conserving the environment, seeking to offset climate change, and promoting sustainable development. During the event, each one of the candidates will express their position and commitment to the planet. All six of the leading candidates will be in attendance.

Also, in light of Earth Day, Colombia’s Ministry of Environment, Housing, and Territorial Development announced the approval of a project by a Canadian fund to invest $5.6 million to help Colombian industrial companies modify their production processes to reduce harmful environmental outputs.

The ministry also announced that the Government of Japan approved a $421,000 project to help reduce the output of substances that harm the ozone layer.

Meanwhile in the cities of Bogota, Cali and Medellin, efforts are underway to help promote a clean and healthy planet.

In Bogota, the city will be literally “making it rain trees” by dropping thousands of tree seeds from Blackhawk helicopters around the city.

In Cali, organizations are encouraging and leading people to go out and plant trees.

Meanwhile the city of Medellin has turned Earth Day into a day without cars; effectively restricting all privately owned cars from driving, only buses and taxis are allowed to occupy the roadways.
