Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday called for an end to the bloodshed in Syria where the government has been violently trying to repress a rebellion.
“The situation in Syria worries us enormously,” Santos said during a speech.
“They keep massacring the civilian population and the international community may not remain indifferent over this,” Santos said days after the U.N. Security Council turned down a resolution demanding Syrian leader Bashar Assad step down.
Colombia, a temporary member of the Security Council until December 31, had been working for stability in Syria and respect for the Middle Eastern country, said Santos. The defeat of the U.N. resolution did not mean that the international community would not act to stop the bloody repression that has cost the lives of approximately 4,500 Syrians since March last year, he added.
