Colombia haven’t been able to secure qualification to July’s Under-21
World Cup. Following a victory over Argentina, the Colombians needed
for either Venezuela to draw or lose, or for Paraguay to lose.
Unfortunately, both won.
The final day of the tournament began well for Colombia. Against Argentina, which lacked any kind of inspiration, Ricardo Chará scored the only goal from a header in the 65th minute.
The first possibility for Colombia to qualify for the World Cup was for Uruguay to beat hosts Venezuela.
José Velásquez put Venezuela ahead on 14 minutes but Santiago Garcia equalised just before half time. However, second-half goals from Alejandro Peña (own goal) and Rafael Acosta earned the Venezuela a 3-1 win.
All eyes were then on the last match of the championship, between Paraguay and Brazil. Colombia needed the latter to win this match, but already being crowd champions, the young Brazilians weren’t as motivated as in previous games.
Hernán Pérez scored the opening goal for Paraguay in the 55th minute and his side easily defended their lead to secure qualification.
As such, Brazil, Uruguay, Venezuela and Paraguay will represent South America in Egypt, next July. Colombia finish fifth, and Argentina end in last place.
