Colombia Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos Friday confirmed the
country’s armed forces are carrying out an offensive in border areas to
further weaken guerrilla groups.
According to Santos, the armed forces are involved in intense fighting in areas close to the Venezuelan and Ecuadorean border to diminish guerrilla presence there. The new offensive would be part of the security forces’ ‘Strategic Leap’ strategy that seeks to attack the FARC and ELN where they are still strong.
Ground forces, supported by air force bombing are attacking assumed guerrilla camps and positions in the eastern department of Arauca, where prominent FARC commander ‘Grannobles’ would be operating.
The army also reported offensives in Valle del Cauca and Nariño, in the south of the country.
