Colombia at the economic forefront of Latin America: Santos

Colombia has gained a position on the forefront of development in Latin America, the country’s president, Juan Manuel Santos, said Saturday.

According to the president, “Latin America has become an investment recipient of global standards. Important things are happening in Latin America.”

“Colombia has come to show itself as a country at the forefront of Latin America as a whole. In Colombia also things are happening,”  Santos said optimistically.

His country’s leadership in the region is due to Colombia’s capacity to generate work and attract foreign investment after providing security and stability, said the President.

“We have been the country that has generated most employment in the past few years. Colombia has been the country that has attracted more foreign investment of all Latin American countries. Colombia has been the country that achieved lowering its unemployment rate each month for 33 months,” Santos explained.

Additionally, Santos said that — together with Ecuador — his country had been most successful in securing an economic growth avoiding a “very unjust” tendency of growing the economy while the poor are getting poorer.

“We have broken that tendency over the past few years and, together with Ecuador, we have reduced inequality most in all Latin America, the President claimed.

Ever since taking office in August 2010, Santos has made poverty reduction and employment generation one of the key issues of his administration.

In spite of the successes claimed by the president, Santos’ approval has gradually sunk to to only 50%. 43% of Colombians disapprove of the president’s work.
