Deputy defense ministers from South Korea and Colombia have signed agreements that will strengthen military cooperation between the two countries reported newspaper El Espectador.
The two countries’ respective deputy defense ministers, Lee Yong-gul and Yaneth Giha, signed a military information protection and confidentiality agreement on Wednesday in Seoul, South Korea.
The accord is designed to improve bilateral relations regarding defense and security issues, arms modernization and acquisitions, according to the South Korean defense minister, as well as to promote academic discourse on the subject.
Colombian Deputy Defense Minister Giha will speak Thursday at the opening of a defense forum on Jeju Island, an event in which South Korea is to talk about its contracts and arms acquisition operating systems.
The South Korean defense ministry also plans to send three instructors of Taekwondo, a martial art that is a reported requirement for South Korean soldiers, to teach Colombian cadets.
The signing of the agreement is an important step in a defense cooperation process put into motion by Colombian Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera’s visit to the East Asian country in December.
