Colombia’s minister of foreign affairs said she expected Colombia and South Korea would soon sign a free trade agreement, RCN Radio reported Tuesday.
Minister Maria Angela Holguin said she anticipated the pact would be signed on June 25 when South Korean President Lee Myung-bak visits Colombia.
“We are in FTA negotiations with Korea, which began with President Santos’ visit last year, I think we only have one final round of negotiations and then we hope that the presidents will sign this treaty,” said Holguin.
The minister’s statement came after a meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan who arrived in Bogota Tuesday and met immediately with President Juan Manuel Santos, the South Korean Ambassador in Colombia, Jong-Choo Youn, Minister Holguin, and other members of the Santos administration.
At the meeting representatives discussed important bilateral trade issues relating to science, technology, the environment, infrastructure and transport. They also reviewed the agenda for the Korean president’s upcoming visit to Colombia, which will take place after the G20 summit in Mexico.
The announcement was made at the launch of a stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the “establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Colombia.”
