The mayor’s office in Bogota has proposed a new educational initiative for pre-school students in the capital that will encourage children to become bilingual.
According to reports by El Espectador, by 2010 the city hopes to offer bilingual education to pre-schoolers. The program will be directed to students by age group. The secretary of education has formed an international agreement and believes that the program will be sucessful as young children easily acquire new languages.
The Chamber of Commerce of Bogota published a report stating that the city’s capacity to handle international negotiations in another language is medium-low.
The Chamber of Commerce in Bogota declared that it is fundamental “to stengthen the quality of education and the formation of human resources with emphasis in bilingualism”.
The city of Bogota is ranked 11th in Latin America on the subject of bilingualism.
