The Colombian government accepted aid from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to improve its security situation, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.
Newly appointed Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon explained that the IDB will invest money to send a team of security experts to advise security forces on improving security forces, but he did not specify whether the aid was a loan or a grant.
According to the radio station, former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani, who was mayor during the September 11 terrorist attacks, is rumored to be one of the experts.
“Every survey shows public security as one of the biggest concerns of the people and so we talked with General Naranjo [of the National Police] about the possibility of receiving an IDB mission with the best experts in the field,” said Pinzon. “We have a police force that is exporting its expertise to many countries but we are also open to receive knowledge to improve security.”
