3 FARC guerrillas killed in action in northern Colombia

Three members of the FARC’s 58th Front were killed during an army operation in the north of Colombia on Monday, according to an official report.

The report says that heavy fighting was instigated by the 58th Front’s third in command Luis Fernando Marin, alias “Franco,” in the Nudo de Paramillo area, a mountain range that covers parts of northwestern Antioquia and southern Cordoba.

Leonardo Pinto Morales, commander of the army’s 24th Mobile Brigade of the Joint Task Force of Nudo de Paramillo, said that “the clash occurred Monday morning resulting in two men and one woman guerrilla killed in military operations, who were identified with their aliases as ‘Elmer’ or ‘Carecaballo,’ squad leader ‘Nayibe,’ right hand man ‘Iguano’ and another guerrilla who has not been possible to identify.”

He added that his unit confiscated two AK-47 assault rifles, a Galil rifle, communications equipment, three hand grenades and various cartridges. Unusually, they were dressed in uniforms usually reserved for the national army.

This year the FARC’s 58th front — estimated to have some 150 fighters — suffered the loss of 22 fighters, of which six were captured, seven demobilized and nine killed in combat, said the army.
