Colombia’s Constitutional Court on Thursday declared itself unable to rule on a request to prohibit bullfights and cockfights.
With a vote of five magistrates in favor of maintaining these popular ‘sports’ to four calling for their prohibition, it was determined that the claim to make bull and cock fighting illegal in Colombia was not viable, reported news station Caracol.
The Court vote was taken due to a recent lawsuit against Colombia’s animal protection statue, which protects against the cruel mistreatment of animals in all cases except that of bullfighting and cockfights.
The country’s Inspector General had requested that both these controversial cases be exempt from animal protection statue regulations because they are both widely considered popular Colombian cultural heritages.
Because of the Constitutional Court inability to rule on the case, both ‘sports’ remain legal throughout Colombia.
