Barley crops which supply Colombia’s beer industry will be affected by climate change, the Director of Colombia’s largest brewery corporation, Bavaria, said Wednesday.
Director Andres Peñate said that long term climate change will seriously affect the barley crop, grown in Argentina and Canada, that supplies the Colombian beer production industry, reported Radio Caracol.
Peñate also said that environmental changes will lead to limited access to water in the Colombian Andes, thus restricting the supply of another of the popular beverage’s essential ingredients.
“Bavaria, a subsidiary of the multinational SABMiller corporation, has an agenda to adapt to climate change. We are reusing the water vapor released from our plants to generate power … We have a mandate to use less water, more efficiently,” Peñate stated amid growing concerns about the company’s future.
Bavaria made the decision to change the packaging of Colombian beer brand Águila. The previous packaging was thicker and could only be reused 20 times where as now, it can be reused up to 44 times.
Another environmentally conscious decision made by the company was to change its fleet of diesel powered distribution trucks to vehicles with environmentally friendly engines.
