The leader of Colombia’s Bolivarian Socialist Movement (MBS) claims that his organization was prevented from registering itself as a political party by the electoral commission, which demanded documents from it that were not in fact legally required.
The MBS began to submit documents to achieve registration as a political party eligible to run for Senate on January 19.
MBS leader David Corredor went to officially register the group in Bogota Monday but his application was rejected.
Corredor on Tuesday denounced the National Electoral Commission’s rejection, saying that the commission had requested documents that his party was not aware were necessary.
To register as a political party in Colombia, an organization must collect a list of signatures equivalent to 2% of the number of Colombians eligible to vote.
Corredor said the MBS plans to appeal the decision, RNV reported Tuesday.
