Prisoners of the Picaleña prison in the central Colombian city of Ibague are no longer able to get drunk after authorities dismantled the liquor factory they had built.
The liquor factory was discovered Monday after the prison was raided by hundreds of law enforcement agents investigating rumors of a imminent prison escape.
Apart from the liquor factory and the 87 gallons of “chicha” or “chirrinchi” it had produced, authorities found a pound of marihuana, 210 grams of cocaine, 109 knives and 13 cell phones allegedly used to extort local businesses.
The Ibague police commissioner told local newspaper El Nuevo Dia that the alcohol and drugs had been surrendered “to the competent authorities.” The newspaper did not report whether investigations against the prison’s authorities had been opened.
