The Greater Caribbean Scenic Arts Festival is underway in Colombia’s Caribbean city of Cartagena, featuring a host of dance and theater performances.

The festival kicked off on Wednesday April 3 and runs until April 6, with a theme of “Origins and Destiny.” This theme will be represented through musical and theatrical performances which explore the diversity and cultural fusion which has resulted from the transnational movement of people between the Carribbean, Europe, and Africa.

“We talk a lot about the music going and coming, that is, Europe and especially Spain, influencing our cultures, but those expressions also went to Spain and came back,” the festival’s co-director told EFE.

Some of the event’s special guests will include the biographer of the Nobel Prize winning Colombian author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as well as Dutch anthropologist Ieteke Witteveen who, will discuss the mutual influences between Europe and the Caribbean.

Cartagena will be the primary event site but several other locations in the country’s north will also host events, including the city of Barranquilla, Arjona, and Carmen de Bolivar.
