The FARC set up a secret ‘academy’ to prepare guerrillas to infiltrate
Colombian public universities, recruit students for their armed battle
and intimidate the academic community, Caracol Radio reported Wednesday.
The radio station was able to look into files of the Prosecution that is currently investigating 55 possible FARC infiltrators.
According to the files – found on FARC computers that were seized in Meta earlier this year – the guerrillas created a “personnel office” between 1997 and 2002 with detailed information of at least 8,000 members of the guerrilla.
Some of these guerrillas were assigned to infiltrate public universities and received extensive education and training to be able to enroll in the universities. They also were trained on the use of explosives.
A Prosecution source told Caracol it has already been able to identify 15 of these 55 infiltrators and is ready to warrant their arrest. One student already has been arrested.
