Captured drug lord “Fritanga,” a prominent member of the neo-paramilitary group Los Urabeños, was allegedly collaborating with the people responsible for guarding him.
In a letter addressed to General Gustavo Ricaurte, director of Colombian prison agency INPEC, numerous allegations of corruption, which stemmed from an anonymous informant, were made.
It was alleged that a senior warden of the Giron prison in Santander, where Camilo Torres, alias “Fritanga”, was being held, allowed him to conduct illegal activities from within the prison.
After his well-publicized capture in July, Fritanga was transferred from Bogota’s La Picota prison to Giron following reports of prison corruption and escape plans. On November 26, INPEC claimed that Fritanga attempted to bribe six prison guards from the maximum security prison in Giron, to help him escape.
Fritanga is now in a high-security ward in Picaleña near Ibague, where he is awaiting extradition to the United States on drug trafficking charges.
