Mayer Candelo, the team captain of one of Colombia’s most successful soccer clubs on Tuesday announced his retirement after scoring his 100th goal on Saturday.

Shortly after scoring his 100th goal on Saturday April 6, the Bogota Millonarios captain and midfielder told sports journalist Jaime Dinas on his radio station, that he will retire when his contract is up in December 2013.

Despite making his professional debut for Cali soccer club, Deportivo Cali, Candelo believes he will continue his post-playing career with Millionarios.

“I am preparing for a managing position (DT), Millonarios have proposed that I remain here [with them] after my retirement,” said Candelo. “I do not think I will hang up my shoes in Cali, I think I will do it with Millios [Millonarios], here they want me a lot,” said Candelo.

Candelo also expressed the desire to spend more time with his family, as a reason for retirement.

“I feel that the time has come, I want to dedicate myself to my daughters, for that reason I have not renewed [my playing contract] with Millonarios,” said the team captain during the radio program.

“Siento que llego la hora, quiero dedicarme a mis hijas, por eso no he renovado con Millos” Mayer Candelo en jaimedinas.com 105.3FM

Millonarios are currently tied for first place in Colombia’s premier soccer league.
