Colombia Trade Minister Luis Guillermo Plata denied Thursday that
Canada put conditions on the approval of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA)
between the two countries.
Canada did not put conditions on the approval of the Free Trade
Agreement (FTA) with Colombia, Colombian Minister, Luis Guillermo Plata
said Thursday. Canadian Congressmen demanded eight requirements earlier
this week.
“The Canadian Parliament did not issue an official statement indicating conditions for the approval of the FTA with Colombia”, Plata said in a statement.
Colombian senator Alexandra Morteno Praquive stated Tuesday that Colombia would have to meet eight conditions to achieve the FTA, such as to review the number of people displaced by violence and to comply with international labor laws.
Plata noted that the document Praguive referred to, “is a legislative summary of the Research and Information Service of the Canadian Parliament. It was prepared to show a summary of the changes needed in different Canadian laws to implement the trade agreement with Colombia. It is not a governmental document nor has any official legal status.”
