Caiman leather, men’s wear drive double digit growth in Colombia’s exports to France

Colombia exports to France are on track to increase by 30% by the end of 2014 at current rates, according to figures cited in Colombia business magazine Dinero.

In total, Colombia’s exports to France reached $5.1 million for 2013. In the first quarter of 2014, exports totalled $2.4 million, well on target to outdo the previous year’s record. Given the increase in the first quarter, growth could be as high as 30%, or an increase to $7.2 million by year’s end.

Contributing to the impressive export growth were such items as raw and tanned animal hides, caiman skins, women’s swimsuits, and men’s underwear. However, the commodity topping the list of Colombia’s most exported items to France this year is formal men’s attire, amounting to $1.1 million in the first quarter of 2014; an increase of 89.6%, reported Dinero.

The Colombian state that has experienced the most significant increase in exports in the first quarter of 2014 is Antioquia. One of Colombia’s most populated states and one of the most important economic centers of the country, Antioquia more than doubled its exports in the first quarter of 2014, with a 113.4% increase, bringing the state’s total exports to $682.498 in the first quarter, compared with $319.876 in the same period in 2013.

Antioquia has approximately 6.6 million inhabitants of which more than half live in the metropolitan area of the state capital Medellin.
