A bus travelling from Bogota to Medellin has crashed and rolled down the side of a mountain, resulting in ten fatalities and a further 12 wounded, Caracol reports Friday.
The bus reportedly departed from Bogota at 9PM Thursday evening, before the bus driver made a detour from the usual route due to an apparent road collapse that had impeded any possible passage in the department of Cundinamarca.
The crash occurred on the improvised route at around 12:50AM. Although the exact details surrounding the cause of the incident remain as yet unknown, authorities have suggested that bad weather could have played a significant role.
The Captain of Cundinamarca’s Fire Department, Ivan Velanzuela, did explain, however, that the accident happened in an area that is full of cliffs and very difficult to access, adding that there “are very frequent bumps in the place around where the bus rolled at least 50 or 60 metres,” according to El Tiempo.
Rescue authorities rushed to the scene to assist the victims, with initial reports stating that four people had been rushed to hospital. The latest news indicates that ten people have been killed in the accident, with 12 of the remaining 15 on board requiring medical treatment for injuries.
