A brave Colombian side were beaten 1-0 by world champions Spain in an international friendly played on Wednesday.
The Colombian national team missed last year’s World Cup but certainly got a taste of it as Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu reminded one of South Africa due to the large amount of loud ‘vuvuzela’ horns.
The noise had no negative effect on Colombia however, as Hernan Dario Gomez’ men showed to have a solid defense and even created a small number of chances before the break.
After the interval, Colombia began to dominate play with Spain spending most of the time on their own pitch.
With Hugo Rodallega replacing Giovanni Moreno in the second half, the visiting team came closer and closer to Iker Casillas’ goal but failed to actually hit the target.
But exactly when Colombia had their best phase of the match, it was Spain to break the deadlock as sustitute David Silva directed the ball behind Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina after a cross from the right wing in the 89th minute.
Colombia continued to attack in the remaining few minutes but had to settle for a 1-0 defeat despite playing better than their opponents throughout most of the match.
Gomez is currently preparing his team for the Copa America, which is to take place in July. Between now and then, Colombia are set to face South Korea and China in friendlies.
