A bronze sculpture by famed Colombian artist Fernando Botero was sold for $1.7 million at Christie’s auction house in New York on Wednesday.
The sculpture “Bailarines” (Dancers) by the renown Medellin-born artist was put on auction as part of the Latin American Art Sale of the world famous auction house held November 15 and 16.
Of the 10 works on sale by the Colombian sculptor and painter, seven were snapped up for a total of $4.39 million.
These other works by the Paisa painter and sculptor included “Pareja Bailando” (Couple Dancing) which sold for almost $1 million and “Adan y Eva” (Adam and Eve) which went for $662,000.
The value of the Latin American works of art, which included pieces by Mexican painter Diego Rivera, reached $15.3 million.
Virgilio Garza, director of Christie’s Latin American Art Department told news agency EFE “dance is a very popular theme which shows wonderful use of his [artistic] language.”
