Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro announced the future installation of bilingual tourist street signs for the area of La Candelaria, Bogota’s historic city center.
According to an institute of tourism press release, the 76 signs planned will “provide information on all tourist attractions in the historical center of La Candelaria”, while also bringing Bogota into line “with other world tourist cities”.
The signs to be delivered will include 11 welcome signs, 30 ‘totems’ providing information on the nearby area and points of interest, 15 information signs for specific tourist attractions, and 19 direction signs to make the tourist spots easy to navigate.
The signs were designed with ease of use in mind in order to combat the problems of “stress, fatigue, dependence, time wasting and disorientation that often affect tourists”, said Luis Fernando Rosas, director of the Institute for Tourism.
The signs are visually easy to understand and all text is displayed in Spanish, English and Braille
Should the pilot program in la Candelaria prove successful, the government intends to expand installation of the signs to 19 other locations throughout the city.
