The mayor of Bogota the Wednesday will launch the Bogota Bicentennial Route 1810-2010, a trail that leads tourists through the Colombian capital, stopping off along the way at sites of significance for the city’s independence movement.
Passing through La Candelaria, Bogota’s colonial center, the route visits 44 flagship sites, including the Plaza de Bolivar, the Cloister of St. Augustine and the Primary Cathedral of Bogota.
The route is designed to take in the major historical sites associated with country’s independence and hopes to generate cultural awareness and emphasise the importance of urban conservation.
To celebrate the inauguration of the new route, the District Institute of Cultural Heritage (Instituto Distrital de Patrimonio Cultural) will offer free pedestrian tours from July 14 to July 30 at 10AM and 3PM. Those interested in participating should register in advance here because space is limited.
Tourist trails marking the bicentennial are also available in the departments of Cundinamarca, Norte de Santander, Tolima, and others.
