Bogota received the Latin American award in Urban Planning and Information Platforms 2010 from New York’s Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), reports magazine el Dinero.
ESRI is an agency that provides a geographic approach to regional problem solving by addressing “social, economic, business, and environmental concerns at local, regional, national, and global scales.”
ESRI praised Bogota’s geographic information produced by the Ministries of Planning and the department of Cadastre.
Maria Camila Uribe, secretary of Bogota’s Urban Planning said that “Bogota … can now improve the decision-making process for the benefits of citizens and decide where they may or may not build housing, where there is greater demand for schools and where more green areas are needed.”
Adolfo Gustavo Marulanda, director of Public Registry said that “our goal now is focused on perfecting these geographic information systems to be more effective in the city planning process.”
As part of their attempt to produce clear geographic information Bogota has published a detailed on-line map of the city.
