Bogota police arrested a man suspected of having sexually assaulted or raped more than 40 women in Colombia’s capital, local media reported Monday.
According to the authorities, the man operated in several of the city’s poorest slums where he approached women at home.
“He came to the homes where women were alone with the news that they had won an appliance. He posed as a representative of companies as LG or Panasonic or pretended to be a social security pollster,” an investigator told newspaper El Tiempo.
According to the newspaper, the police suspects the men then drugged the women and would stay a whole morning or afternoon in the house while assaulting or raping his victims. Following the sex crime, the man left the house carrying something of value.
When being transferred to a local jail, police had to protect the suspect from an angry mob who tried to lynch the man.
Police had been tailing the suspect since 2005 when the first complaints against him were filed, but lost track of the man between 2007 and 2009 when he spent time for assault in a jail in the city of Cali.
