Two more public officials have been implicated in the Bogota corruption scandal.
The Inspector General’s Office has ordered the opening of an investigation against Ombudsman Francisco Rojas Birry and his assistant Nelsy Cardenas Mora.
The investigation has arisen after a letter was received in March by the Bogota Council, apparently sent by Guido Nule. Nule was charged in March with embezzlement, fraud, bribery and conspiracy for his role in the Bogota public works corruption scandal.
The letter requests that the Bogota Council investigate “the unjustified personal wealth increase in 2009 and 2010” of Nelsy Cardenas Mora.
The letter claims that Cardenas Mora asked for a bribe from the Nule Group to ensure the Public Ministry would not comment publicly on delays of a road project in Bogota.
At the same time, the letter asks the question of whether the bribery passed through the office of Rojas Birry or it was an independent act.
Nule has denied the authenticity of the letter, and investigations are under way to determine who signed the document.
